‘Social farming’ is a farming practice offering care service, education, economic activity to the disadvantaged. In Korea, 105 social farms or communities practice social farming. There are 15 social farms in Jeollabuk-do.

It is not easy for the social farms to be financially independent without government subsidies. They have the limitations that prepare and provide specialized programs.

In June, Jeonbuk was selected as a construction project area for ‘The Rural Socioeconomic Service Revitalization Support Center,’ which fosters social farms, local communities, social economy organizations, and so on to address socioeconomic service issues in rural areas

At a national level, it enables to systematically support social farms to provide with the vulnerable social service in rural regions. Collaborating with public and private organizations, social farming would contribute to agricultural changes and social innovation in rural areas.

To revitalize social farming in Korea, the center develops a support planning, raises funds(subsidies, donations, contributions), conducts research on social farming and service program, constructs an information network, manages social farming support·evaluation, trains professionals, promotes social farming, and so on. In addition, it offers a startup program to farmers, commercializes social farms’ products, supports social farms’ promotion and market development, develop public-private partnership.

The social farming revitalization support project of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs has financially supported social farms, but it is not sufficient that the farms are financially independent. The voucher service could be a vital source of social farmer’s income when the disadvantaged use social farming service in the voucher payment process. The center could play a significant role as a platform connecting the disadvantaged to social farms.
